Rolling along...

Here is the next two weeks of activities and readings.
There are four online readings.
I would like you to read two this week and then two next week.
Write on your blogs two principles/statements that you could share with someone else that you learnt from the articles.
These should be dot points for each reading (no more than one sentence per dot point). Two principles per reading (eight dot points in total)
e.g.
  • When developing........ it is important to.........

1. Gestalt Theory in Visual Screen Design

by Chang, Dooley & Tuovinen

www.acs.org.au/documents/public/crpit/CRPITV8Chang.pdf

2. The effectiveness of nonverbal symbolic signs and metaphors in advertisements: An experimental inquiry

by Eric D. DeRosia

(You will need to access the full text through the UOW Library)

3. Learner Control, Cognitive Load and Instructional Animation

by Hasler, Kersten & Sweller

http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/115806804/abstract

Go to UOW Library to access full text.

4. Nine Ways to Reduce Cognitive Load in Multimedia Learning

by Richard E. Mayer & Roxana Moreno

http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/content~content=a784752466~db=all

Go to UOW Library to access full text.

This will be the last of the class readings and activities. I have been receiving your essays. Your reading response results will be posted in the next day or so and the essays should be marked within a week or so...

From this point in the subject you should be working on your final major assignment.

To remind you...

Students are to develop an instructional tool for designers of effective interface. The instructional tool can be represented in a series of slides or a website or a video (YouTube style) or another learning object after negotiation with the Subject Co-ordinator. The tool will instruct teachers in an area of Visual Design. This could include be the elements and principles of design or effective interface design principles. The length of the tool will vary from student to student. e.g. the video should be no longer than 5 mins or the slide presentation should be no more than 20 slides. The tool must reflect current research into the area including theory and application.

The instructional tool will be posted to your personal blog and sent to the Subject Co-ordinator via email as well. If the file is too large it may be submitted via CD Rom.
Some suggested topics may include:
• Visual design
• Data representation
• Perceptual processing
• Gestalt theory
• Image based object recognition
• Space perception
• Images vs Words
• Visual problem solving processes
• Models of visual perception
The clues are in the large font! This assignment should reflect your learning and development throughout the subject. That is, if you have been learning about good design then the assignment should reflect the principles of good design!

  2. hi every one
    i have a question
how can i upload a PDF file to my blog?
    thanks

  3. Hi Amani,
I converted mine to a word document. Then(if you have 2007 version)apparently you can upload to a blog BUT before I tried I discovered I didn't need to bother because I just posted the link..... check out my last post. Did you get the article from UOW library? If so just go to the site and copy the URL OR maybe even try converting to a JPEG because you can upload up to 8MB in that format...
OR unless someone knows how to do what you asked in the first place.... cause I don't:)... but now that you asked even though I don't need to know...I WANT TO!- so if you find out let me know please.

  4. Hi,
I tried to upload from Office 2007. It certainly said it went, but I don't know where! It didn't end up on my blogg. If it ended up on somebody elses blogg I apologize now. Just delete it.

  5. LOL... I didn't get it.... I did say I didn't do it didn't I? See if your article can be found on UOW library e-journal list- its quite comprehensive.

We should send out an APB for the missing article... was it controversial?... maybe Kaos has it.... better get your shoephone out and ask 86.

  6. thank you so much Pauline
    i put a URL
    i have another question
    about the last task
could some one give an example of an instructional tool and what the slides include
    i did not understand it

  7. I'm with you Amani, I am also clueless about what an instructional tool is. I was hoping to become more enlightened as I read more.

    ReplyDelete
  8. My interpretation is that an instructional tool is a resource employed to deliver or aid instruction that can have many forms but could probably include anything from a how-to style handbook to a full flight simulator. I think we're aiming more for the how-to style resource to assist designers in the development of effective interface designs. This will be developed in and delivered via a short video presentation or a powerpoint presentation.

I think the key things would be that it will instruct/teach the viewer/user about an element of effective interface design as explored in previous weeks such as the use of visual metaphors in multimedia to reduce cognitive load.

Here's an easy instructional video on wikis

  9. ofcourse it also needs to demostrate scholarly research and be underpinned by sound design principles.... :-)

A quick whinge - I'm so so tired - my kids have been sick (7yo daughter with chickenpox 5yo son with gastro) and I've decided to apply for a new job ... The challenge is how do we fit all this stuff in ??????

  11. Hang in there Abbie, one last assignment..... just keep saying it to yourself like a mantra! Is it a teaching position you're going for? Or maybe exec? Anyway, good luck, and may the force be with you!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Abbie, really feel for you. It is certainly really hard to keep all those balls up in the air.
Like Vicki says, only 1 assignment to go. Just try & do a little often.
The great thing about kids is that they go down hard & fast, but they recover fast as well. It is usually mum & dad left reeling & you take longer to recover.
Thanks for the youtube tip. Have had a look & there seems to be a bit there. I put in "instructional design". Have bookmarked the page for a further look tomorrow.
It can only get better for you from here on in. Cheers

  13. Ta - you're all very sweet and supportive (where were you all when I stared this in 2007)? LOL. Yes, I do cling to the "one more to go" especially since it's the last one for my MA as well as this subject. That definitley keeps me afloat. Marina - The 'do a little often' is really the key to getting through the MA I've found too (putting it off and trying to do it all at once DOES NOT work ... I've been there :-S ) Hope you're all going well. I really want to to see the Task 2 results...

  16. what a practical day I'm having... Can't find article 2,3 & 4. Is anyone else having issues? Some of the sites need registration and $$.

WOW the commenting here is amazing. How do you find the time? I've been all over the nation lately because of work.

    Good luck Abbie

  17. Hi all – to find the articles for free:

The first is available at http://www.acs.org.au/documents/public/crpit/CRPITV8Chang.pdf

The next three you’ll need to know the Journal name, volume and issue which you could get by just google-ing (scholar) the title of the article if the link in the blog doesn’t work.

    But here they are:
    Article 2. Psychology and Marketing – vol.25(3)
    Article 3. Applied Cognitive Psychology – vol.21(6)
    Article 4. Educational Psychologist – vol.38(1)

Next go to the UOW library > go to Databases > then find the quite small link to “A-Z journal list” > follow it.

Now you can search for each of the journals by title and you’ll be able to access them via your UOW username and password.

    Hope this helps.

  18. Hi Viki - LOL - mantras rock! I use many, the positive ones help to drown out the other one I'm familiar with that goes something like "...oh crap...oh crap...oh crap...oh crap" you get the picture!

I'm applying for a position at the UOW innovation campus - fingers crossed!

  19. Hi guys:
I have problem to open the 1. Gestalt Theory in Visual Screen Design link. Is it just me or it is not available?

  20. Hi Joe
I have the article. I know when I did go to get it it didn't come up at first, then when I was "clicking' back it appeared! As I have no idea how I actually did it I have just tried again & can see what you mean.
Try going through the library. The paper is from the Australian Computer Society Inc 2002, it was presented at the Seventh World Conference on Computers in Education, Copenhagen, July 29 - August 3, 2001. I know the library has papers from conferences. The authors are:
Dempsey Chang, Laurence Dooley and Juhani E. Touvinen
    Hope this helps.

  24. Amani,
Have a look at slideshare site. They have quite a large range of different slide shows on visual design.
I'm not sure exactly what we need to do, but I am assuming it is doing something that includes the elements & principles of visual design relating specifically to interface design.
It is an instructional tool, so it is YOU teaching the principles & elements. So the slide show or powerpoint or video needs to include the relevant points. You of course have to take into account the elements of visual design in your presentation.
I am in Cairns on holidays with the kids at the moment. Bought my uni stuff with me, but as you can imagine it VERY hard finding both the time & the motivation to do to much. Have read the articles, but as yet have not posted my points to my blog. Will do soon.
Hope all are well on their way to finishing the assessment.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I wish I'd started this last task! My son and Husband also came down with chickenpox and I've been writing a job application. So don't worry - I doubt anyone is as far behind as me!

I wish I had the results and feedback from the previous tasks (I find it helps and is motivating).

For the instructional tool. If you're not keen on the video and plan to use powerpoint (like me) some things I've considered inlcuding in the presentation would be:

    - The objectives and learning outcomes for the tool (what the tool will include and what you should be able to accomplish after using it)
    - design principles (referenced) and links to further resources
    - practical guidelines (referenced)
    - examples of principles in practice

or maybe develop an effective interface design heuristic and then show how to apply it and why through your slideshow. An example of design heuristic can be found at http://www.useit.com/papers/heuristic/heuristic_list.html

I'm also considering making my tool non-linear and using the interactive capabilities of powerpoint (hyperlinks and buttons) to allow the user to acces the information, principles, samples and links to support the central instructional
tenet. I'd have to apply the principle to make it effective (very 'authentic' ...).

Don't we have a few instructional media designers who can give us a hand :-) ?

    Good luck all!
    Abbie

  27. Hi Abbie,
some very good stuff- thanks... nah I beat you-you are way ahead of me.... gee it's good to be the first in something (or is that the last?)
Actually I am starting to worried about Ian... I sent him a few of emails- at least one was about the feedback- and he is normally very good at responding.... maybe we should get someone to check out his office he might be buried under a mountain of emails... or perhaps it is all part of his Milgram-like experiment to turn us into a COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE!!!!
Check it out people!... start putting comments on each other's blogs and see what happens- maybe we'll start getting some feedback. In the meantime thanks for those who have been hard at it. And thanks Abbie for those cool tips.
    :)PP

  28. Hi Guys,
I was thinking of doing a similar thing Abbie ("non-linear and using the interactive capabilities of powerpoint (hyperlinks and buttons").

Does any one know of a tool that allows this form of PPoint to be uploaded online allowing the links/interactivity to work? I presume tools like slideshare etc don't allow this.

Hmmm I haven't played around with Google docs much, but I suppose this might be useful for me?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Pauline,

All of my emails have been wiped out and the IT guys haven't been able to recover it yet. Could you email me back again? I haven't been able to locate your email address. Ian hasn't sent any marks has he?

    Vicki

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hi Viki,

I've only had marks/feedback for task 1 so far. So you're probably not missing anything from Ian.

    Cheers,

  31. Hi Jo,

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. I suspect you're right and the way to go is a document sharing site. I'll let you know if I come up with anything. At this stage I'm inclined just to attach it to an email!

  32. Hi Vicki,
I'm using my other computer did you want me to resend or just the addresses.... anyway it's pgmp790@uow.edu.au or rpparahi@bigpond.com. if you are trying to contact me post a comment on my blog (by the way thanks Jo)... this thread is becoming so long it's becoming a bit of a mission find the end [more information for your experiment prof.]

IN answer to your question... nadda, zilch, nothing.... that's it I'm officially worried... I'm ringing him tomorrow- hang on maybe he is on hols... (or sitting on a stool in a white lab coat, clipboard in hand observing us on multiple screens in a bunker somewhere in the bowels of UOW....discussing our ramblings with other mad scientists in this hellish experiment!...mwahhhaa [Machievellian laughter].... (his - not mine!)... surely this must be some breach of the Geneva Convention?... or UOW research ethics....section 24d under paragraph c... Cruelty to lab rats and/or students????

Poor Ian... I keep forgetting they are on semester break- we [of the never-never...the distance people] don't notice it. Keep in touch and let me know if you get anything.

  33. Hi Guys,
I have the result for both assessment 2 & 3. (That is the essays not what has to be posted onto the blog)
I got those ages ago, probably about a week after the major essay was due.
I was actually impressed that the major essay mark came back so fast.
I really have to get on with assessment 4. I have alot of it floating around in my head.

    Marina

    ReplyDelete
  34. I can't believe it! Marina got her results that long ago!!! Now I really am confused. Has anyone elso gotten theirs?

    Vicki

    ReplyDelete
  35. Nup I haven't got the reading response (task 2) which was submitted on the due date or my essay (task three)which I had a small extension for due to the rampages of chickenpox through my house.

It's not session break anymore - it's week 10 of the academic calendar - I work at UOW... maybe I'll go on a little field trip to building 23.

Anyone else got their results? Maybe they are being marked in the order that they were received.

Can I be really evil and whooo hooo I finish this MA in two weeks!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. hi every one i got my results for task2 and 3 the essaye ages ago, afte one week since i submet task 3. that strange you did not receve your untel now,
good luck every body with the last task.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yes I have results for 1, 2 and 3 back too.

    ReplyDelete
  38. No I don't think so Abbie I handed mine in on time and without extension and I don't have mine yet.... now I'm really bummed, miffed, annoyed...er I mean confused! Hey Jo when did you get yours back?
    :)PP

    ReplyDelete
  39. I really can't understand why some have not go their results back. Mine came as an attachment to an email from Ian "message to student". I have just looked & I got both 2 & 3 back together on the 28th Sept. I am sure it has been an oversight & you will get them this week when he finds out.Still that is little consolation, it certainly was good to have them back before I began this last MONUMENTAL task!. Good Luck

    ReplyDelete
  40. I also got my 2 and 3 back on the 28 Sept. It was a message that went to my uni address (and then onto home - yay for automatic forwarding).
It had no content, or title and simply had an attachment named jo.doc with the results - could some people have overlooked an email like this?

    Good luck finding an answer!

  41. Hi all, hope you are all well on they way to finishing this last assignment. Just thought I might share something I found in slideshare. Just search Richard Mayer & a few slideshows will come up that relate directly to multimedia design.
Richard Mayer is a professor of psychology who has wrote very extensively on multimedia design pertaining especially to education.
Hope it might help some with some more ideas.
I am starting to think that the real challange with this assignment is keeping it to 20 slides!!! There is SO much that can be included.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hi Jo... not a chance.... check everything like a proctologist...don't miss a thing (particularly when it comes to assignment results or emails from Ian)...I'll send another nagging email and phone this afternoon if I don't get too heavily into my assignment and forget the time.
Speaking of stuff from Ian- have you checked out his website and art...I think it must be the only abstract stuff that I can understand- I'm a renaisance/realist girl myself- but this is like Rorschach made easy- the meaning (don't know if it's the one HE meant though)comes to you straight away...or maybe I'm so tired I'm looking at things subconciously.... anyway-check it out (particulalry you talented art types....JO & Vicki) if you haven't already and tell me if I'm right... www.ianbrownartist.com

  44. Just had a little panic attack, couldn't get onto my blog or post a comment on this blog. I sent out a general email to see if anyone else had the same problem. It seems to have fixed itself so disregard any email you have gotten.
Am getting there with this next assignment. Will have trouble condensing it to 20 slides & endeavoring to avoid cognitive overload!!! It seems I have learnt something!
Pauline, did you get your results?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yes I did, thank you Marina.
Vicki's still waiting- hopefully this weekend- then we can both celebrate. The wait nearly killed me- but it's so good to get feedback...and a relief for my poor long-suffering husband and mum :)...
Thanks for the lesson about the importance of providing timely feedback Ian...I'll NEVER forget it (if I'm ever in the position of marking assignments) LOL.
Glad to hear you are progressing with your assignment Marina....and although it sort of came back to bite me just quietly you can use animation to overlap information on your slide so it appears as say 20 slides but there are in fact more- I did it with mine (asignment 1) and I don't think I lost any marks for that.
I'm doing a webpage for assignment 4... +/- a video. My lovely nephew is loaning me his website...actually his server at least until it is marked...then I'll save the files-and convert it to another project (after feedback from my fellow bloggers and Ian)...I've already been asked to make a fun website-or learning object for staff on the topic of infection control the brief is to include games, surveys and calendar.... but maybe if I do the instructional tool right they can do it themselves....but NO I want to do it- that's the best bit! This course has been so helpful in MAKING me learn new skills that I would have otherwise been too undisciplined or unmotivated to do. It's all about the feedback....I'm sooo going to miss it...thanks for the painful reminder:(
    :)PP

  46. I have finally finished the assignment. Have got it onto AuthorStream but can't get it to my blog! (it seems to have undergone a few changes in the move from powerpoint to AuthorStream) Will make another attempt over the weekend.
Hope the rest of the group have got the job done as well.
I have learnt SO much during this semester.
    Good luck to all.
    Marina

    ReplyDelete
  47. Saw your presentation Marina- I think you nailed it...Looks like you sorted that out- the animation and placement turned out much better than mine....my arrows (assign 1)and objects were mal-aligned...was not impressed. Did you also convert to video? Just wondering because users have to press the button to advance through the pages....or was that deliberate to cater to slow readers (like me)...genious!
    :)PP
PS when do you finish your course? Keep in touch...us M.ed UOW resourse people need to stick together and continue to share ideas...and change the world! or at least enlighten area health eh?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I am only finishing my first year so I have a bit to go. Will only do 1 subject per semseter next year. I did 2 subjects first semester & that was WAY to much pressure.
Will be working with Bachelor Midwifery (UTS) students((1st/2nd/3rdyear)next year. It is unit facilitor so that means extra days, so I want to keep the pressure down as much as possible.
As for my assignment: I didn't know converting to video would make it easier to use. Just learning about custom animation & inserting the YouTube video was a new experience for me.
I am so impressed with what others have done. I really have no idea how to do half that stuff.
I think a 'practical' based course would be great for the techn-novices like me. Will have to check out the local community college or TAFE. I so want to know how to do that stuff!
    Good luck to all.
