Your reading response:The following site is composed of a series of interesting essays written by Donald Norman. Instead of just giving you one reading I thought you may find it interesting to choose one of the essays written by Norman and use it as the basis of your reading response.
The essays can be found at http://www.jnd.org/dn.pubs.htmlThe assessment task asks you to review the reading and critically analyse the text (refer to the Subject Outline for full details).
Note: When referring to the relevance for 'development of multimedia ' you may want to refer to other sources.
When choosing from the many essays presented remember to choose an essay that relates to interface design, visual design or cognition.

Remember: This assessment task does not have to be posted on your blog... it must be completed using Word and emailed to me.
Looking forward to your responses... due August 26!

ACTIVITY:
I would like you to watch the You Tube video of Donald Norman

This guy is brilliant... and I love his writing style- I think I'd read his stuff for pleasure... even.
ReplyDeleteThat said... now for something completely different.. just checking if anyone got my invitation to view my presentation??? (not the first one using slide share but the 2nd one authorSTREAM)..thanks for the heads up Abbie)...
I'm not being narcissistic (well... not entirely) just checking because although I have a had a few hits on their site [authorSTREAM] but it hasn't registered on my outlook as being sent but maybe that doesn't occur when sent through authorSTREAM. Just checking if anyone has received it since it was sent to the entire group email...I only need one response. NOTE... this is NOT an experiment.
many thanks PP
PS... Ahem...[sheepish sideways look] it might have come to you as an invite from 'Socratities' (don't ask)...
nope, no invitation came through to me. hope that helps.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jo...that helps a lot.... will try it again. If you don't get it by tomorrow can you [or anyone else out there?] let me know please? (that's asuming you read this blog in time that is)
ReplyDeleteThanks :)PP
Hi PMP,
ReplyDeleteI have received it! Not gone to it yet (as am busy busy with reading response but will get to it really soon. Authorshare was heaps better but I still lost a few bits lie my black fades and something funny happened with my title screen but it was a huge improvement on the many others I tried (having not done this at all before!)
On another note:
Earlier someone (I think it was you PMP) mentioned paying for access to full text ACM Dig Lib stuff. Forgive me if I'm telling people stuff they already know but...
if you access the UOW Library page, go to databases, then form Faculties/Schools choose EDUCATION databases - you can access ACM using your UOW student email login, for free! The ED/IT Lib is also great for hose doing MA (IT).
Abbie
:-)
Thanks Abbie... didn't know that...brilliant!

Hi Steve,
ReplyDeleteSorry to write you here but your email bounced my message.... Thanks for inviting me to view your blog... I was going to post the following on your blog but it doesn’t allow- you will need to add your team members. You might have been wondering why you haven’t had any comments...that is why.... well here is mine until you do your team list.....so here it is;
[a response to your 6th sense post...]
"Impressed am I"... or so a little voice [from Star Wars...] tells me.... it IS the movie producers that come up with this stuff! I think they (the creators of these off-world ideas) are very creative and imaginative. It is exciting to live in a time where almost all we can imagine (world peace aside) will more than likely be achievable. Jules would indeed be chuffed. And although nothing much surprises me...doesn't mean it doesn't fascinate me!
Love the blog... it reminds me of 'Tool Time' urrrgh urrrgh.... Was that the motif you were aiming for? Good choice for a tech teacher:)
:)PP
Has anyone else noticed the time stamp on our comments (mine anyway) is about 7 hours ahead?? whats that about?
ReplyDelete;(PP
Hi Antoinette... I tried to post a comment on your blog but like Steve's it said it is restricted to team members (yet I notice I am on your team member list) Can anyone help??? Anyway in the meantime... here is what I posted (hope Ian doesn't mind me using his site as a community notice board... or is that part of YOUR experiment Ian?
ReplyDelete[response to Antoinette's presentation]...
Note to self...In future do NOT get sidetracked by the author profile... I had just finished my review...the definative works of a compulsive commentor...when I returned it was blank (the page AND my memory). This must be the 10th time this has happened! Argh@! (not just on your blog!... HUMPH! I'm not a total airhead:()
So I will attempt to sum up....
Presentation 10
Message 10
Originality 10
If my calculations are correct that is 30/20 Antoinette.
Never mind- you get the idea... certainly worth watching- very good... and original.
:)PP
Hi Kristina,
ReplyDeleteI was not permitted to post a comment on your blog- message same as above....
[intended] Comment....
Hi Kristina,
Good post. Thanks for that link...
:)PP
Liz, I am posting this here as I am having some difficulty with your blog. The link to your presentation only brings me to the posting page. When I try to post a comment it doesn't seem to have enough room to see that security word & then post the comment. Am I doing something wrong?
ReplyDeleteI am in the middle of my reading response hoping to it finished by tomorrow 26th. Did everybody else get the email through SOLS that said that the due date had been extended until the 2nd Sept? The email came from IMorris & I am unsure who that is. I have asked Ian for verification, but was wondering if anyone else would know. Am working towards tomorrow to have it finished anyway. Leaving it another week will only put me behind for the 3000 word essay due next!
ReplyDeleteI gosh! I only just realised the sender of IMorris - all the rest of the information seems to make sense.
ReplyDeleteThe changed date was a godsend for me as the late notification coupled with a very importantly busy week and a half at work has meant I will be in a panic to complete this tomorrow.
I will send an email to Ian as well, but I get the impression he is a busy man with a busy inbox... Marina (or anyone else) could you please post a message on here as soon as there is an update?
Thanks!
Jo
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI freaked out when I read the previous two comments as I am far from ready to hand in Assessment 2 at this point, so I rang his number and spoke to his assistant. The extension is legit as she posted it on his behalf. Phew.
Steve
Thanks Steve
ReplyDeleteIMorris is one of the blog followers, but there is no other information available.
It is good to have verification. Never thought to make a call.
Can I assume IMorris is a she even though the email was signed Ian.
Very confusing, but never the less I am relieved.
I am getting there, but not as far along as I had hoped. Will not be sending assignment today.
Marina
Thank you Steve!!! Sorry my business hours have been insane, so email was all I could manage.
ReplyDeletePhew!
LMorris - the L stands for Laraine - I think. I'm glad to stillhave this weekend to finish my assignment.
ReplyDeleteI think it is all part of the great blog research:) Thanks for the confirmation all the same Steve...I wondered about the I [L] Morris.... I figured it wasn't his maiden name:)
ReplyDeleteBased on the 2/9 I have taken a couple of days off to get my head into it (assignment 2)... so you are still way ahead of me.
:)PP
Just out of curiosity... what reading did you all decide on?? There is so much choice I spent most of the morning printing out his essays... the Donald certainly has a way with words:)
sigh.. this has the feel of an adhoc forum (discussion board). Except threaded discussion is easier to compartmentalise etc. I have kinda given up going to all the blogs and just seem to visit the first bunch (mostly posting here)to which I received early invitations. There are about a dozen I haven't heard from.
ReplyDeleteOh! that doesn't mean I don't love seeing posts here - it's the only way I know I'm part of a group! :-)
ReplyDeletePM - I've chosen 'Design as Communication' and 'Waiting - a necessary part of life' (because I startef on that one thinking it was the one and only reading). Not finished yet - as have disgusting flu (along with kids) so am taking advantage of the extension.
I have no idea how to approach the 3000 word essay, as to me the task description reads like an annotated reference (which are usually 250-500 word summaries/critical reviews). I'm going to have to think hard about that as 3000 words seems like a lot for the intended content. Thoughts?
AW
I am with you, have given up trying to entice those not responding. Not sure how that goes when it comes to meeting course requirements!
ReplyDeleteI am doing the essay on The Future of Education: Lesson Learned from Video Games and Museum Exhibits. Am hoping it will cover all bases. Hope to have it finished tomorrow.
I have looked at the next assessment (briefly) but haven't really given it alot of thought. Is it more like researching a topic but basing your essay around an article. Will have to go & have a good look at it, but that will be my task for next week. Cannot procrastinate on this one. Will have to get to & get the readings ASAP.
I've quickly made my way throught the second assignment - because it's only worth 10% and have decided to start the third one - worth 30% and due in just over three weeks. I hope I won't regret it later!
ReplyDeleteam sure you have made the right choice. I am just procrastinating knowing that half the problem is that it is only worth 10% so I am finding it difficult to get motivated for that mark. I have set aside sunday to write the other 450 words! Do agree with Pauline that Norman's writings are interesting & easy to read. Not sure that I would go as far as to say I would read them for pleasure. Give me a trashy novel anyday!
ReplyDeleteThoroughly enjoyed the DN reading. Bit of a problem when you keep reading instead of writing anything. Perhaps it's just another avoidance strategy :-)
ReplyDeleteHas anyone managed to get all blog group members to accept their invitations?
I currently have 21 listed readers but only 18 followers (3 that don't want to be identified or just ticked the wrong box perhaps).
Like others, I've sent out numerous invitations.
If there's anyone out there who hasn't got access to 'Up a tree with 903' at http://antoinette-edge903spring09.blogspot.com/?zx=9fe4bab553f6e6fa, please let me know your uow email address. You can contact me by email at mark080@uow.edu.au or antoinette.kendall@gmail.com and I'll send another invitation.
Hope this info helps.
Hi Tricia,
ReplyDeleteLike Antoinette, I am having problems responding- you need to go into set up and allow comments if you haven't already done so. I keep getting the message... 'only team members allowed to comment'(or something like that...
But...here's the message I was going to post-
Hi Tricia,
Good presentation- explained Saul's point... well done.
However just a comment...sometimes people also think in words (hear)as well as mentally (see) images...although I'd never admit to that in QLD (dubious laws around involuntary confinement apparently)
:)PP
I am so glad that I was the only one who got lost in this course...I am still not quite sure about the extension on the reading response but I only finished it last nite so personally, I would say...I think so:)lol
ReplyDeleteWatched most the video but can't finish all 1:20 long video, my internet downloading reaches its limit...but from what I watched, I am sure Don is into cars:) I really appreciate his way of thinking and admire his ability to turn every possible chance to exploit more possibilities of design ... I haven't reached the stage he described 'automatic design' but one day I hope I might;)
Pauline, I think I fixed the problem, you should beable to comment on my blog now.
